A TRIBUTE

Ambassador Bill Lane, AO

1919 - 2010

Ambassador 'Bill' Lane who sadly passed away on 31 July lived a large, fulfilling and meaningful life. Bill loved people, horses, learning and above all his beloved Jean and their family.

As United States Ambassador to Australia under President Ronald Reagan and President George H. W. Bush, Bill Lane became one of Australia's truest American friends.

Tributes to Bill have poured in from his friends and colleagues all over the world, and not least from Australia.

Our special tribute is to give thanks to Bill and Jean for their patronage of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue, and in particular to the Stanford leg of the West Coast Leadership Dialogue. Bill was keen to re-engage ties between Stanford and Melbourne, where Weldon Stanford - brother to university founder Leland - lived from 1868 until his death in 1918.

We shall miss our good friend, Bill Lane.

The Australian American Leadership Dialogue is the private bipartisan diplomatic initiative which brings together Australian and American leaders to help review and refine the parameters of the bilateral relationship.

The purpose of the Leadership Dialogue is to facilitate mutual understanding among Australian and American leaders on matters of designated mutual interest. The Leadership Dialogue is non-partisan and focuses on:

creating new intellectual, cultural, educational, institutional, social and policy space to be owned and occupied by Australian and American citizens

contributing to the sustainable high performance of our communities through 2050 and beyond

Australia and the United States, as Pacific neighbours, pursuing collaborative initiatives designed to advance the prosperity of the citizens of the Asia Pacific community, e.g. intelligent infrastructure

leveraging Australian access in the United States, and American access in Australia, into real influence on matters of respective and designated mutual interest

relationship management between current and likely future leaders from both countries

mitigating the asymmetrical nature of the bilateral relationship through frank and open exchanges among equals

Leadership Dialogue programs and events are resourced by respective non profit education foundations in each country:
