Last Thursday, Australia awoke to the news we had lost one of our favourite sons; Tim Fischer, had lost his long battle with cancer.
A long-standing friend of the Leadership Dialogue, Tim has been described as the quintessential Australian; having fought for his country in Vietnam, returning to run the family farm and subsequently entering State parliament, where he served with distinction for many years. His service to Federal Parliament, however, was particularly resonant- primarily through his roles as Trade Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, where he fought for better access for Australian goods and services to the global marketplace.
Tim was a powerful advocate for the alliance between Australia and the United States. His passion manifested itself in the expansion of this relationship into the economy, whereby the Australian-US Free-Trade Agreement emerged.
Australia is a much better country as a result of Tim’s efforts and we thank him for his enormous contribution. Our sincere sympathies go out to Judy, Harrison and Dominic.
