Robert D Hormats

Under Secretary of State Bob Hormats has a special place in the development of the Leadership Dialogue. It was in Bob’s Goldman Sachs New York office where the inaugural Australian delegation to the Australian American Leadership Dialogue met in June 1993. It may not be widely known that the first meetings involving the original June ’93 Australian Leadership Dialogue delegation were held in New York, prior to Washington DC.

Following our June ’93 meeting with Bob Hormats, other sessions in New York took place at Time Magazine (courtesy of Marshal Loeb and Henry Muller) and the Asia Society hosted by Ambassador Nick Platt.

Bob’s stellar career in academia, think tanks, the public and private sectors has delivered incisive perspectives towards prevailing global concerns. He brings a unique track record on the National security Council where, from 1969 to 1977, he was senior economic advisor to Dr Henry Kissinger, General Brent Scowcroft, and Dr Zbigniew Brezinski. He served as Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs from 1981-82, and Ambassador and Deputy US Trade Representative from 1979-81.

Bob Hormats has maintained close personal and professional relationships with Australian leaders over decades, and we thank Josephine Linden for her facilitation of Bob’s current re-engagement with the Leadership Dialogue.

It is fitting that the presentation to Bob will be made by Hon Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia, and member of that original June ’93 Australian delegation to the Australian American Leadership Dialogue”.
